Sound Coral

A shared listening experience of the marine ecosystem.

Sound Coral

Sound Coral is an interactive installation conceived by Rocco Papìa and made from reclaimed materials. The coral form evokes the importance of marine ecosystems, while the sound experience invites reflection on their gradual “acoustic desertification”, linked to the climate crisis and human activities.

By touching sensors on the branches, visitors activate recordings and move physically closer to the structure, even embracing it to listen. Each branch opens a different category of the marine sound world. Information and QR codes support the exploration.

ISRAW created two corals, documented in Calderara di Reno and Barcelona. The project combines sound research, construction, programming and electronics. Materials include pipes and metal rods recovered from industrial waste; sound sources include the archives and researchers named in the original credits.

Pages dedicated to the individual branches retain the scientific background and recordings connected with the artwork.
